Oi's To Men - NZ Oi Punk

Oi's To Men

Christchurch's Punk band Oi's To Men play and perform drunk anthems about everyday shit including getting paid on dole day, telling your boss to fuck off, locked in the cells on a sunday and more songs that will crack you up and relate to.
They aren't together anymore but their loudmouth , outpoken frontman still lives on as in Hatewanx from CHCH. Their stuff can be downloaded here: Hatewanx

Picture above is Oi's To Men Playing live in KFC. Actually!

Sora Shima

Sora Shima Myspace Page

Instrumental in nature, with an intense and well-crafted wall of sound which dramatically rises and falls on a dime, Sora Shima are by no means at a loss from lack of vocals. Destroy Electronica, the 3rd opus from the Hamilton based band reins in the ferocious nature of their previous releases to craft a solid and intense soundtrack – as harmonic as it is chaotic.

In the vein of artists such as Mogwai and Sigur Ros, those looking for an audible fix will not be disappointed to find that Sora Shima’s live performance really hits the spot. Relax, take it all in, and let your eyes roll back into your head to the transcendent sound of Sora Shima. (95bFM)

Distancing (E.p) - 2007
4 track "guitar drone" EP released online via Archaic Horizon Records. Broken acoustic and electric guitars were recorded at home by Jason via handheld MP3 player and manipulated with various software to create sprawling effects. The tracks were originally just 'filler' material to put on the band's myspace page until proper band recordings were available - but after good response and an offer by Archaic Horizon, were released online in MP3 format. Download them for free from the AH site or archive.org.

Spinetinkler (E.p) - 2006
Debut Sora Shima demo EP recorded almost entirely live in single takes at Dudley Studios in Hamilton on August 26th 2007. Original recording left raw (unmixed and unmastered) but compressed (destroyed) on Jason's computer at home. Cover artwork kindly donated by Carl Lyons Studio. Released first on CD-R in extremely limited quantities (some still available) with handmade packaging and heart-stamped CD. Now available as free download from archive.org.

Hamilton "Circle Jerk Fest" 2005-2009

This is a Hamilton Music Festival that has 10 or so bands playing one (or 2 nights) that have Hamilton bands covering Hamilton bands. Fortunately someone is smart enough to record and put these songs up for download.

The bands and covers the play are from all over the wide genre of Hamilton musicians, bands, groups etc. From Psychobilly to Indie, Metal to Electro Pop & Hardcore to Hardcore Rap there is something to enjoy and sometimes have a chuckle at i.e Chugganaut.

the page lets you download 1 mp3 rather than a whole album.

This years (2009) Circle Jerk Fest includes a favourite Powerviolence/Punk/Hardcore band Wasteland, NZ best Psychobilly band Dick Dynamite and The Dopplegangers & a sweet Atmospheric rock/Stoner Rockish band Sora Shima. Plus heaps more.

This page/link also includes the Previous years right from 2005. Very Cool.

Some Daniel Johnston for you

I'd saythis guy is an eclectic taste. You will love him or not love him. Though donload this and give him a listen to find out which love you have for DJ.

Daniel Johnston is one of the most incredible songwriters you've never heard. Destined for the underground, his sound is bare bones, usually nothing more than voice with piano, guitar or chord organ. To some it may sound elementary, but when you dig deeper you find some of the most heart wrenching songs ever written. Oddly enough his popularity stems from his own hand made cassette demos that he passed out to friends and fans.

I am going to be covering a song of his in the very near future at Franklin Arts festival.
Keep an eye out for shows here: Brent West

For More Daniel Johnston see his myspace and or watch his rollercaoster ride life documentary The Devil & Daniel Johnston.

Wesley Willis - Greatest Hits Part II

Wesley Willis

Wesley’s favorite form of greeting was the headbutt. This left a permanent bruise on the center of his forehead. His friends called it his third eye.

Both of These chaps had mental problems (not the PC term I know, but it's time to publish this post) both of which you can look on Wikipedia
